A Problem in the Application of the Comparative Method to the Reconstruction of Earlier Forms of Chinese

Abstract
As is well known, the comparative method of historical reconstruction has been a major component of the field of historical linguistics since the 19th century and has in fact been applied to the study of virtually all major world language families. But in Chinese historical linguistics and especially historical dialectology, it has seldom been used, either in China or the West. The primary reason for this is that specialists have felt that the complex lexical stratification in the dialects constitutes an insuperable obstacle to comparative reconstruction. The object of the present paper is to introduce a solution to this problem, and thereby enable historical linguists to expediently apply the comparative method to the reconstruction of earlier stages of Chinese phonology.
