Abstract
Objective: In response to increasing demand for faculty development within our institution, we developed a program aimed at creating a cadre of faculty with advanced skills in faculty development. Program “graduates” provide faculty development to their home departments and other departments within the institution.
Description: The University of Iowa College of Medicine Teaching Scholars Program was initiated in the fall of 1999. Each department chairperson is asked to nominate one faculty member to participate, based on the nominee's demonstrated interest and skill in teaching and demonstrated leadership potential. During the first year of the Teaching Scholars Program, the participants attend a monthly halfday training session that combines a variety of active learning activities, such as small-group discussion, written exercises, skill practice, and videotape review. Each session focuses on specific skills and concepts in three areas: instructional design, teaching skills, and professional development. These content areas are aimed at enhancing the participants' skills and modeling approaches to effective faculty development. The program also requires that participants complete preparatory activities for each training session, which include readings, self-assessment exercises, and exercises for application of skills. In addition, participants are videotaped in teaching situations during the first year and receive feedback on their teaching from other program participants.
