Abstract
Past studies of merger activity have provided only limited insights into the structural (especially lead-lag) relationships between aggregate merger activity and macroeconomic/market factors. To fill that void, a databased multiple time-series approach is used to develop an explanatory model for describing changes in the incidence of mergers relative to changes in macroeconomic variables during the current merger wave. Empirical evidence based on quarterly data covering the 1947-1977 period indicated a very weak relationship between merger activity and economic conditions, with changes in industrial production and business failures lagging merger activity.
