A characterization of cancellation ideals

Abstract
An ideal II of a commutative ring RR with identity is called a cancellation ideal if whenever IB=ICIB=IC for ideals BB and CC of RR, then B=CB=C. We show that an ideal II is a cancellation ideal if and only if II is locally a regular principal ideal.
