Abstract
The implications of the postulate of covariance are examined for the anisotropic elastic–plastic solid. A definition of symmetry based on Noll’s intrinsic theory of material response is proposed. Canonical constitutive equations for the plastic variables and the structural tensors that characterize the anisotropic response are derived and discussed.
