Abstract
A nude mouse infectivity model which allowed for the determination of the viability of low numbers of oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum was developed. The organism had been implicated in several outbreaks of diarrhoeal disease associated with contaminated surface waters. Groups of mice were infected with oocysts of C. parvum from infected calves. Oocyst counts in faeces and times elapsed before these were shed, were monitored. Mice inoculated with 1000 oocysts began to shed on day 32 while those inoculated with 1 oocyst shed on days 68 to 88. It was possible to infect the mice with very low numbers of oocysts, down to 1 oocyst.
