Abstract

The opinion literature has promoted the concept of mentoring in nursing with little scientific evidence of its validity. Investigation of this concept has been limited to the exploratory and descriptive stages. Additional research is needed concerning the mentor-protégé relationship to provide empirical support for many of the claims in the literature. It is anticipated that as empirical and theoretical support accumulates, mentorship will become a more deliberate process.
