Abstract
Goldfried proposes that the causal factor in systematic desensitization is cognitive mediation leading to self-control of anxiety. In the present study, Goldfried's method successfully reduced the frequency of phobic spider dreams in a 24-yr-old female client. When a spider dream subsequently occurred it was markedly less fearful. Since cognitive preparation is considered to be minimal during sleep, the results seem opposed to Goldfried's theory and suggest the operation of other processes, such as counterconditioning. © 1977.
