Abstract
The absolute intensities of the ν
3 and ν
4 fundamental bands of perchlorate anion have been measured in a state of matrix isolation in a potassium iodide host. Force constants were evaluated with the aid of the chlorine isotopic shift and used to define the transformation between normal coordinates and symmetry coordinates. The dipole derivatives with respect to symmetry coordinates were analyzed from the point of view of a charge and charge flux model, and the results were compared qualitatively with simple electronic bonding theory.
