Abstract
Responding to the growing market demand for individualised services and premium quality, manufacturers are increasingly prioritising capabilities such as flexibility, reconfigurability, resilience, and sustainability to achieve a High-Performance Manufacturing System (HPMS) goal. This special issue includes 17 studies on the design, manufacturing, configuration, and operation of such HPMSs, and collectively marks a shift from technology-centric optimisation toward value-oriented socio-technical synthesis. Reorganising next-generation information technologies, including artificial intelligence, digital twins, advanced optimisation, and system modelling, the contributions address key challenges in enhancing supply chain resilience, promoting product lifecycle sustainability, and optimising smart manufacturing scheduling. This special issue not only presents cutting-edge research but also offers a cohesive framework to guide the transition towards more adaptive, humane, and environmentally responsible industrial ecosystems.
