Abstract
An investigation into (1) whether the Chinese Speaking Test (CST), a tape-based interview system, can be scored reliably by different raters & (2) the degree of relationship between the CST & the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), a face-to-face interview format developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). In a validation and reliability study (N = 45 university students of Chinese), it was found that the CST was rated reliably & consistently by the different raters & that CST ratings compared favorably with OPI ratings. Given these similarities, it is suggested that examinees would receive similar ratings on either test. It might be assumed that the CST is an attractive alternative to the OPI as it is tape-based & can therefore be administered to a group by a single administrator. However, completed tests will still have to be rated by a trained individual, which can be a costly process, & students reported a preference for the more natural method of face-to-face interviews. Thus, the OPI method is found preferable whenever the necessary resources are available. 6 Tables, 4 References. D. M. Smith
