Abstract
This paper describes the design and initial evaluation of a device to transduce opening magnitude and movement of a valve used to separate the oral and nasal cavities. Miniature optoelectric components have been used to construct a device which meets a number of a priori design objectives. Usefulness of the device and direction for future research are discussed.
