Abstract
This paper describes an experimental/analytical study of the effectiveness of base isolation and damped interaction between a model of a steam generator and its primary housing structure in a nuclear power plant subjected to earthquake ground motion. The design of the test generator model, its connection to the primary structure by yielding elements and the influence of such yielding restrainers on the response of the generator are included. Details of an optimal design problem for selection of the “best” combination of isolation and energy absorption devices are presented and their effectiveness demonstrated.
