Abstract
Contrastive linguistics is discussed as it relates to applied linguistics. Several frameworks for contrastive study are examined with reference to their ability to contribute to the teaching of English as a foreign lang. Data on linguistic interference are discussed relative to the structuralist phonemic approach & the generative phonology approach. The phonemic framework is shown to be not powerful enough to capture all the relevant generalizations underlying phonological interference. However, the generative approach is seen to be too powerful, & still unable to make some relevant generalizations. It is proposed that a cyclic model of generative phonology can avoid difficulties encountered by the standard model. The cyclic model is thus the most appropriate framework for applied contrastive linguistic studies. 10 References. B. Annesser Murray
