In this paper an artificial intelligence and operations research approach to modelling flexible manufacturing systems are presented. They are demonstrated on two sample problems: the machine layout problem and scheduling problem. Features of the two approaches as well as differences between them are explored. Artificial intelligence and operations research formulations of various problems in flexible manufacturing systems are presented. Two new modes for application of expert systems are identified.
