Abstract

Antecedents: The thyroid nodule is a common pathology at the present time and is of concern due to its increasing incidence. The main objective during the evaluation is to distinguish the benign nodule from the malignant one. Materials and methods: There were 150 patients analyzed who had the inclusion criteria for this study, which was performed at the Dr. Enrique Garcés General Hospital during the period 2005 - 2015. Ultrasound findings were studied and comparisons were made with histopathological findings after thyroidectomy. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, odds ratio were evaluated, with their respective 95% confidence intervals. The chi-square test was applied to determine statistically significant associations, when the value of p<0.05. Results: A statistically significant association between the ecographic characteristics and thyroid cancer was found. The presence of solid nodules shows a sensibility (S) for thyroid cancer of 78.68% and a specificity (SP) of 84.26% (OR=19, 78: 95%CI: 8, 56-45, 69; p<0, 001), vascularity (S=73, 77%; SP=73, 03%; OR=7, 61; 95%CI:3, 63- 15, 93; p<0, 001), calcifications (S=81, 97%; SP=86, 52%; OR=29, 17; 95%CI: 11, 95-71, 18; p<0, 001) and gland consistency (S=90, 16%; SP=64, 04%; OR=16, 33; 95%CI: 6, 33-42, 11; p<0, 001). The TIRADS classification showed a statistically significant association. Conclusions: It can be concluded that international classifications are applicable to our national reality and hence should be utilized for adequate protocol compliance.
