Abstract
Examines the antifeminist intentions & methods of those who criticized women who held positions in the US government, 1930s-1950s, highlighting the efforts of conservative, anticommunist, right-wing white males who were threatened by women's growing social, sexual, & economic independence. Misogynistic media portrayals of women in Washington, DC, as communist sympathizers who used their seductive powers to lure men to their cause are described. Parallels are drawn between right-wing attempts to discredit & silence women during the McCarthy era & similar antifeminism forces in the modern period. K. Hyatt Stewart
