Abstract
The implementation of Medicare Part D has the potential to improve patient care, lower health care costs, and advance the profession of pharmacy through pharmacist-provided medication therapy management (MTM) services. Unfortunately, most Medicare beneficiaries have not been exposed to pharmacists performing such activities. 1. In addition, consumers tend to be satisfied with the current level of service they receive from their pharmacy and demand for more advanced services is low. 2. ,3. Despite limited experience with and knowledge of MTM services, consumers have reported that they are willing to pay for services such as counseling on nonprescription medications and dietary supplements and pharmaceutical care evaluations. 1. ,4. , 5. , 6. Educating consumers on the risks associated with medication use and the benefits of MTM services is expected to increase the demand for these services from pharmacists
