Abstract
Several issues raised in earlier studies are explored concerning the Han Buddhist transcriptions & the dialect whose phonology they are thought to represent. New materials & approaches are brought to bear & applied, & a completely new set of phonological reconstructions is proposed. A large set of sample reconstructions will be offered in part 2.
