Abstract
The essays presented during the Memory in Context: Occupation and Empire in France and the Francophone World, held at the University of Iowa in 1996 exploe three areas of modern France: the period of occupation, 1940-44; France's transition from colonial to post colonialism; and issues of inquire in historical and literary studies. The papers explore the recovery from France's recent past.
