Abstract
This article reads two of Haneke's French-language films, Code inconnu/Code Unknown and Caché/Hidden, as critiques of a fortress mentality in the new Europe. Examining Haneke's engagement with Neorealismi aesthetics of the 'encounter'-as well as the tension between interior and street and sound and image in these films-I argue that Haneke uses filmic aesthetics to thwart his characters' efforts to close off space and avoid encounters.
