Abstract
Competency-based education is now required for nursing programs, with students gaining proficiency within 10 domains prescribed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Known as The Essentials, students must demonstrate practice readiness upon graduation. Finding active learning strategies to keep students engaged and assess soft skills, such as communication and compassionate care, is needed. Art as a pedagogical method has been shown to improve students’ affective skills, such as empathy and nonverbals, as well as increase observation skills and critical thinking. Creation of a podcast after viewing artwork helped students embody the effect social determinants of health have on their patients.
