Abstract
Psychologic stress has been linked to the development and progression of cardiovascular disease. Biobehavioral treatment approaches aimed at reducing the impact of environmental stress have been developed as an aid in the reduction of cardiovascular risk. The present review describes the basic techniques of four different biobehavioral treatment approaches popular for cardiovascular disorders. These approaches are: Relaxation, biofeedback, anxiety management, and anger management. Available research regarding the application of these techniques to cardiovascular disorders, in particular to hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias, is briefly reviewed. A final summary discusses factors that should be considered when applying these techniques to patients with cardiovascular disorders.
