Abstract
This paper stresses the importance of imaging and image analysis for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease — the number one killer in the western world. The paper gives a brief overview of cardiovascular imaging modalities and analysis techniques. It is followed by a more detailed description of three of the many upcoming application areas in which cardiovascular image analysis is expected to play a primary role: early detection of atherosclerotic disease from peripheral ultrasound image sequences; analysis of coronary hemodynamics in 3D and 4D; and non-invasive assessment of arterial plaque vulnerability.
