Abstract
Approximatelf 19 million students attend college in the United States. Although hey are generally healthy, about 20% of youth have special health care needs, including asthma, diabetes mellitus, and learning, mental health, and substance use disorders. Physicians can facilitate the transition of a youth to an adult model cf health care by using structured processes to orient the youthto self-care before entry into col ege. Stimulant medications are effective for treatment of students with attentioi-deficitihyperactiiity disorder, but physicians should monitor, hr signs of drug diversion. Learning disurders may manifest with emotional cr physical symptoms and are managed in a multidisciplinary fashion. Depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and posttraumatic stress and eating disorders are common in tl-is population and can affect school performance. Screening and/cr interventi s for obesky, depression, aruiety, violence, nicotine use, and substance use are effective. Immufatins for influenza, human papillomavirm, meningococcus, and pertussis are crucial in this high-risk population. tsbin, btexual, gay, transgenier, and queer students have unique health care needs,Copyoight (C) 2021 America 1 Academy of Family Physiciars.)
