Abstract
Understanding how to better use psychometric models for research and practice is both an opportunity and a challenge for the field of mathematics education. Psychometric models provide opportunities to use assessments and data analyses as methods for refining theories of mathematical knowledge, but coordinating constructs of mathematical knowledge with psychometric models requires expertise in both mathematics education and psychometrics. In this chapter, we discuss a sequence of key decision points that investigators must consider when designing research that uses flexible psychometric methodology. We also highlight some of the collaborations between mathematics education researchers and psychometricians discussed in this volume as successful exemplars. Ultimately, we seek to show how contemporary approaches to psychometrics allow for increasingly improved research design and implementation in mathematics education.
