Abstract
Based on social cognitive career theory, this preliminary study aims to examine the relationships between civic engagement (CE), STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) interest, STEM self-efficacy, and STEM outcome expectations among community college students. Data from 171 students enrolled across three community colleges located in the state of Iowa, United States, were analyzed with Bootstrapping and power analysis on SPSS. Results indicated that CE is indirectly associated with STEM interest via STEM outcome expectations, with a small effect size. Implications based on the findings are discussed in the context of postsecondary education, including teaching, academic advising, and career counseling.
