Collaborative research methodologies and the construction of a national geospatial clearinghouse to conserve biodiversity in the Federated States of Micronesia

Abstract
This manuscript details the pursuit of spatial data and spatial analytical capacity building in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) in order to support multi-scale marine and terrestrial biodiversity conservation. This includes: 1) Creating the FSM's first national spatial data clearinghouse; 2) Constructing spatial analysis laboratory infrastructure to support conservation; and, 3) Building capacity for spatial data creation and sharing across the FSM and research partners. This is made possible by adopting ‘community based participatory research’ methodologies and adjusting them to fit small island geographies. This allows for the determination of common agendas, synergies among ongoing projects, and intelligent assessments of infrastructure and the sustainability of technological systems and partnerships in the unique Pacific Small Island environment. •A National geospatial clearinghouse is created for the FSM's 607 Micronesian islands.•Collaborative research methods create conservation opportunities across ecoregions.•Community Based Participatory Methods are studied in multiscale Pacific settings.•Integration of non-governmental actors covers financial and management gaps.•Methods are developed for island database creation with conservation applications.
