Abstract
An introduction to this special issue notes the failure of earlier researchers to adequately study the interaction of emotion & communication. The issue of how to conceptualize & categorize affect in the study of communication is discussed. The impact of affect on both message processing & production is considered. Some important paths for communication research to follow, & others to be avoided, are pointed out. 22 References. B. Annesser Murray
