Comparison of associative strength effects in two different paired-associate transfer paradigms

Abstract
In each of 2 experiments, preshift and postshift response dominance levels were varied within a 16-item multiple choice paired-associates list. 64 students participated in each experiment. In Exp. I the correct response was shifted for a given item when that item was performed to a criterion of 3 consecutive correct responses. In Exp. II the response shift occurred for all items on the same trial, following the attainment of a criterion of 3 consecutive erroless trials. In each experiment there were significantly fewer errors when the response to be learned was high in dominance level than when it was low, and there were fewer errors for groups with 3-sec study or test trial intervals than for groups with 2-sec intervals. The effects of preshift response dominance level on postshift performance differed between Exp. I and II and these effects are discussed in terms of differential numbers of shifted items per trial in Exp. I and overlearning in Exp. II.
