Abstract

Fast multisliced X-ray computed tomography yields unique anatomic and physiologic information regarding the function of the heart, lungs, and circulation within the negative pressure environment of the intact thorax. We have applied multinomial models to the distribution of reconstructed lung air content within the large data volumes (up to 4 million 16-bit voxels) generated by the Dynamic Spatial Reconstructor to aid in data analysis. Such modeling coupled with easily accessible user interactive computer graphics routines has proven useful in (1) smoothing over discrete regions of artifact in reconstructed images; (2) allowing for the streamlining of previously time intensive analysis tasks; and (3) providing a convenient numerical framework from which parameters determining regional lung expansion patterns can be assessed.
