Abstract
The question of rule interaction in casual &/or rapid speech is addressed. A contrastive analysis of English & Polish shows that rules which seem to correspond in the two languages are often hardly comparable when their interaction with other rules is considered. Thus nasalization in Eng corresponds to Polish gliding & not to Polish nasalization, which on closer view turns out to be a corollary of the latter. Rule application comparisons in the two languages leads to insightful predictions of possible phonological interference in the acquisition of English as a foreign lang. It is found, for example, that English syllabic conss are regularly replaced by voiceless sonorants in the speech of Poles. This is due to a clear overlap of input & environment expressions of syllabicity-imposing & sonorant unvoicing. A number of practical conclusions are drawn from contrastive rule comparisons. AA
