Copyright in the Classroom: Raising Awareness through Engagement
Journal of Music History Pedagogy, Vol.4(1), pp.179-181
Autumn 2013
Abstract
With the ease and availability of publishing platforms in today’s digitally driven market, the likelihood of a graduate encountering copyright issues in his or her professional career, whether it be academic or performing, has increased exponentially. For this reason, I incorporate a class session and short assignment on copyright into my graduate music research classes at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. This discussion includes an outline of a lesson plan on copyright, as well as a description of an in-class activity and homework assignment. The class session and activities are designed to raise student awareness of, not expertise in, copyright law and licensing.
