Abstract
The evaluation framework addresses: (1) the Singing-Voice-Production-Chain (SVPC) describing the teacher's possibilities for affecting the student's voice production; (2) descriptive, correlational, and causal types of observations; (3) subjective versus objective information; (4) factual correctness; (5) describing how singing is or how it should be; and (6) usefulness of the information in a teaching situation. Under certain circumstances, some argue that causality may be carefully inferred from correlational data.5 But this lack of distinction (between correlation and causation) is being recognized as a serious issue, especially in rigorous disciplines such as medical research.6 Differentiating these three types of information (descriptive, correlational, and causal) is a non-trivial, challenging task that is critical for assessing science-informed pedagogical concepts.7 THE SINGING VOICE PRODUCTION CHAIN (SVPC) Understanding what is actually happening during singing instruction is deeply complex. In very simplistic terms it can be described as a chain of events: (A) the teacher's instructional input, (B) the student's cognitiveneurological processes and voice production (encompassing the aerodynamic, mechanical, and acoustic physics of singing), and (C) the resulting radiated sound, potentially influenced by electronic signal processing (e.g. microphones, equalization, reverberation), the room's acoustics, and how the resulting acoustic phenomenon is perceived by the teacher. [...]our primary focus is on the radiated
