Curious Case of Percent Young and Homicide Across Nations: An Atypical Meta-analysis

Abstract

I argue that percent of the population that is young has been inconsistently associated with homicide across nations because of the partialling fallacy. Previous research includes redundant variables in models resulting in the partialling fallacy. I further suggest a possible latent theoretical construct these redundant variables are measuring, holistic measure of deprivation. I tested two hypotheses: there will be significant heterogeneity of effect sizes of percent young in the published studies, and the heterogeneity of effects sizes in percent young can be accounted for by including redundant variables measuring economic, education, and poverty/income inequality. Using articles published before May of 2021, I obtained 95 partial correlation coefficient effect sizes for the percent of the young population. I included moderator variables for the presence of an economic, education, and income inequality or poverty variables within the models. I estimated a series of RVE meta-regression models. I found models that include economic or education variables have significantly smaller effect sizes for percent young. This article concludes with a discussion of the limitations, and suggestions for future research to explore if the possible latent construct is holistic deprivation.
