Abstract
An in vitro test that can predict accurately the response of a disease to chemotherapeutic agents would be a valuable clinical tool. In the last several years the colony formation assay has been studied as such a test. We provide an overview of the techniques used in the colony formation assay, and give an account of the theoretical and technical problems that recently have been described. The results of in vitro chemosensitivity testing for urological tumors from the various centers are presented. Additional applications suggested for the assay, including screening for investigational drugs and newer chemotherapy testing schemes, are discussed briefly.
