Abstract
Cytomegalovirus proteins have been shown to act as trans-activators on other, heterologous, viral promoters as well as on its own promoter. In the immunocompromised host, part of the response to cytomegalovirus infection may be related to the effect of viral proteins on the transcription of cellular genes. The viral proteins may upregulate the gene directly, or could interact with know transcription factors to increase cellular gene transcription. This article explores the ability of the CMV immediate early proteins to interact with cellular genes which mediate various aspects of the immune response; specifically the cellular genes for interleukin-and tumor necrosis factor.
