Abstract
To the Editor: In the May 1 issue, an article by Klotz and Reimann demonstrated that cimetidine decreases the clearance of diazepam. Cimetidine has previously been shown to have a similar effect on the elimination of warfarin-like drugs.1 In both cases, the clinical effect is toxicity from excessive accumulation of the drug. We have recently observed another important interaction in which cimetidine caused the accumulation of theophylline to potentially toxic levels in a 15-year-old girl who was followed in our clinic for chronic asthma. The patient's theophylline dose had been individualized before cimetidine administration to produce a peak serum theophylline. . . © 1981, Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved.
