Abstract
Discusses the Trinidadian-American dancer and choreographer Pearl Primus (1919-1994), who spent 1949 in Africa studying the dance and ritual practice of at least 30 tribal groups. Refers to the documentation of her research and her participation in the dances of the people she visited. Describes choreographer Jowle Willa Jo Zollar's dance 'Walking with Pearl: The African Diaries' (2003), which enacts a narrative derived from Primus's archival materials. Chronicles Primus's career, her attempt to represent her African heritage, and her effort to underline the role of modern dance in illuminating hidden truths about the human condition. Suggests that Zollar's 'Walking with Pearl' facilitates encounters between Zollar, the dancers, Primus, and the audience through a metaphor of travel.
