Dancing and third Space: Movement Investigations in a Contested Space

Abstract
What and who belongs in Jerusalem is an age-old question. The city is a contested space on the grounds of ownership and territory between the Palestinian and Jewish states and between the religions that lay spiritual and theological claims to the city. This city is full of imaginary boundaries that separate the three Abrahamic traditions. The idea of Jerusalem’s ‘constructed’ quarter is represented in two ways:1.) through the use of maps and signs that indicate boundaries of each quarter; and 2.) in collective imaginations and behaviours of people who pass through these spaces.Through this paper, I will attempt to unpack how acts of performance redefine, investigate and participate in the spatial realities of contested spaces by answering questions such as: *How is the idea of the other constructed through space? How do space and place change perception?
