Abstract
A technique proposed by Louviere (1984) for handling intractable multiattribute judgment problems with a great number of attributes, called hierarchical information integration (HII), is applied to consumer assessments of supermarkets. There are 2 stages in the procedure. First, specific attributes of supermarkets are grouped into managerially relevant higher level categories a priori. Second, subjects' responses to the specific variables are integrated by way of an overall experimental design based on the higher level categories. This method allows the creation of judgment equations for each separate category and a single equation to represent the overall decision about each market. The attributes (prices, selection, quality, and convenience) are redefined by separate sets of managerially actionable variables relevant to supermarket choices. Managerial implications include the finding that price and quality matter more than selection and convenience. In the price dimension, the price of meat matters most; and in the quality dimension, produce quality matters most.
