Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to deconstruct the medical model approach to therapeutic recreation/recreation therapy (TR/RT) in the USA using a disability studies approach. The paper begins by identifying the trend in TR/RT towards defining itself more narrowly, more closely with the medical model, likely a result of increasing pressure from managed care in the USA. Next, the medical model is exposed as a contradiction to the expressed ethics of the professional TR/RT organization in the USA, especially the principle of "Do no harm." Harm is then revealed at two levels: harm to the individual disabled person and harm through obstruction of progress the profession might have made, sans the medical model. The paper concludes by suggesting that a different approach to recreation with disabled persons in a global community is required; one more in touch with respecting differences and including the disabled population.
