Abstract
Investigated is the behavior of detail rules, particularly the rules of dental assimilation in English & Polish, as well as palatalization & palatal assimilation in Polish. The interaction of detail & deep phonological rules is compared. An attempt is made to discover a set of characteristic features specific to detail rules. Detail rules are generally constrained to act within certain articulatory regions--they are broader than the corresponding deep phonological rules & have the effect of permitting the latter to be stated more generally. Their ordering is natural, & they apply in both obligatory & phonostylistic derivations. AA
