Designing expert systems for scheduling of automated manufacturing

Abstract
Effective use of manufacturing resources is the key to success in automated production, especially in light of increased demand for use of manufacturing resources and a larger number of system variables resulting from the introduction of new resources such as pallets and fixtures. Automated manufacturing systems can improve productivity, but they can also increase the complexity of calculating schedules. Expert systems and optimization represent two common approaches to scheduling problems. The following approaches have been used to develop expert scheduling systems: (1) hierarchical, (2) non-hierarchical, (3) script-based or skeleton, (4) opportunistic, and (5) constraint-directed. Two new directions in designing expert scheduling systems are presented for use in a flexible manufacturing environment: (1) a goal-based approach, and (2) a model-based approach.
