Abstract
In 2 experiments with 64 and 40 undergraduates, stimulus sequences consisted of either 2 high-valued (H) adjectives and 1 low-valued (L) adjective or 2 Ls and 1 H adjective. Some of the sets contained an antonym pair in adjacent ordinal positions. Following each successive adjective presentation within a set, Ss told whether they liked or disliked the hypothetical person being described. Recency effects were found; within most adjective sets, responses appeared to be influenced more by the current adjective presentation than by previous adjectives in the set. However, for those sets in which the 3rd adjective was inconsistent in meaning and/or value with the 1st 2 adjectives, there was a reliable tendency for the influence of the inconsistent adjective to be reduced. Additionally, the influence of the current adjective was reduced, especially for antonyms, when the previous adjectives were displayed simultaneously with the new adjective. The bearing of results on interpretations of the impression-formation process are discussed.
