Abstract
Hypothesized that novelty is an important factor in the finding that negative traits have more influence than positive in impression formation. It follows that manipulating prior exposure to high-valued (H) and low-valued (L) personality trait adjectives should affect the degree of differential weighting in a subsequent impression formation task. In an experiment in which 59 undergraduates made person descriptions containing both H and L adjectives, L adjectives were found to be weighted twice as much as H adjectives for a group which previously rated a series of H adjectives. However, L and H adjectives were found to be weighted about equally for a group which previously rated a series of L adjectives. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
