Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe four dimensions (situational, structural process, and outcomes) of pharmacy-third party relationships among types of community pharmacies (independent, small chain, or large chain) and types of third-party payers (government, health maintenance organization, preferred provider organization, or private health insurance). Data were collected from a random sample of 600 managing pharmacists via a mailed survey. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the multiple comparison Bonferroni test. A total of 297 pharmacists responded to 575 deliverable surveys (51.7%). The results suggest that larger firms appear to have an advantage of greater channel influence and control compared to smaller firms. This leads to greater adaptability for dealing with changing market forces in the prescription drug market. However, the results also suggest that patient-oriented services might be limited to achieve adaptability in the pharmacy-third party relationship.
