Abstract
Three experiments used a variety of delayed conditional discrimination procedures to explore pigeons' discrimination of and memory for color (orange and green) and line orientation (vertical and horizontal) stimuli. When information about the specific color and line orientation stimuli had to be retained, colors proved to be much more effective sample stimuli than did lines; however, when only information about the dimension of a stimulus had to be retained, colors and lines were similarly effective as sample stimuli. Moreover, when errors in discrimination performance diagnosed subjects' remembering the dimension or the value of a prior sample stimulus, evidence suggested that pigeons may more easily discriminate and remember the dimension to which a stimulus belongs than its particular value along the dimension. These findings better fit a multicomponent model of memory than they fit a single-trace model.
