Abstract
PRESHIFT AND POSTSHIFT RESPONSE DOMINANCE LEVEL WERE MANIPULATED AS WITHIN-S VARIABLES IN A 16-ITEM LIST. THE STUDY-TEST METHOD WAS USED, WITH THE CORRECT RESPONSE BEING SWITCHED FOR A GIVEN ITEM WHEN AN INITIAL CRITERION OF 3 CONSECUTIVE CORRECT RESPONSES WAS REACHED. 3-SEC PRESENTATION AND RESPONSE INTERVALS WERE USED IN EXP. I AND 2-SEC INTERVALS WERE USED IN EXP. II; APPROXIMATELY 3 TIMES AS MANY ERRORS WERE COMMITTED IN EXP. II. IN BOTH THERE WERE SIGNFICANTLY FEWER PRESHIFT ERRORS WHEN THE PRESHIFT RESPONSE WAS HIGH IN DOMINANCE LEVEL THAN WHEN IT WAS LOW. POSTSHIFT PERFORMANCE WAS ALSO RELATED TO RESPONSE DOMINANCE LEVEL; THE MEAN NUMBER OF POSTSHIFT ERRORS AND THE PROPORTION OF OVERT INTRUSIONS ON THE 1ST POSTSHIFT TRIAL WERE LOWER FOR HIGH THAN FOR LOW DOMINANT POSTSHIFT RESPONSES.
