Abstract

Eclogite, garnet clinopyroxenite, garnet websterite and websterite within Precambrian basement gneisses in the Caledonian fold belt attest to widespread high-P metamorphism from approximately 76 degrees 40' to 78 degrees N. Eclogites with the assemblage omphacite + garnet + or - quartz + or - rutile are common, and formed at minimum P of 20-25 kbar and T 600-900 degrees C, and hence are the medium-T type typically formed in over-thickened crust during continent collision. Preliminary geochronology, regional correlations and field relations indicate formation during the Caledonian orogeny.
